Pestle

Abeir Soukieh is an Arab-Australian poet and writer from Canberra who is currently completing her Masters in Anthropology at the Australian National University.

Artist’s statement:

Pestle*

A smooshing of the heart;
To be highly uncomfortable;
A severe pressing down upon;

When you stand there all subdued because you’re being gripped and jerked and kneaded by several thousand divergent ways of being all of which feel the need to insist upon you following theirs; theirs being the best, the rightest and the only way.

pestle

*Pronounced like ‘Nestle’.
