I See You/Me

Safia Lamrani is a British-Moroccan actor and writer based between London and Tangier. Her work often explores her two heritages and embracing their connections.

I SEE YOU/ME

I see you through the glass
Similar but not the same.
Shouting, my words pass,
Losing my own name.

Unsure how to get through-
The distance feels so far.
Another version of me: you,
At peace with who you are

Able to hear, smell, feel
A part of me that’s hidden.
The you I know is there and real,
Told that you’re forbidden.

There is a chance, I can see,
And all I feel is pride.
I stand up, refusing to be
Someone taught to hide.

Wanting to be whole,
The glass – shatter, smash, break.
Reaching out for what they stole-
No matter what it takes
